“When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it… We stand in wonder at the process taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development…yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is.” –Timothy Gallwey
When training in theatre arts, students should understand that they are always in process. When they are too anxious to get to opening night, they risk undervaluing the growth that takes place along the way. In my classroom I aim to place a strong emphasis on the effort of creating rather than a specific end result. I want to teach students something that took me too long to learn: education in the arts is not about a right and wrong answer. It is about developing your own creative engine and unique voice as an artist.
I aim to widen the gap between the last moment of a student’s performance and the moment that they look to the teacher for approval. Using my knowledge and experience, I can act as a guide to help hone their instincts, but my goal is to see students take the lead in developing a process that is their own.
